Rooms of the House: Talk About Your Home

The rooms of the house are useful words from your first days in English. You need them to describe your home, to ask for the bathroom, and to say where things are.

Most room names are one word, like kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Two common rooms have two words: living room and dining room. Some home words are different in British and American English: flat and apartment, cooker and stove, wardrobe and closet. Both are correct, so learn the two.

To say what is in a room, use there is for one thing and there are for two or more: There's a sofa in the living room. There are two beds in my bedroom.

To say where something is, use a preposition of place: in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of or between. The keys are on the table. My phone is under the bed. The cooker is next to the fridge.

Learn the words in the lists above, listen to the examples, and then do the exercises: match the rooms, choose the correct word, type the missing words and put the words in order.
