Food and Drinks in English: Words You Use Every Day

Food words are some of the first words you need in English. You use them at home, at school, in a shop and in a cafรฉ. This page has 25 of them: fruit and vegetables, basic food like bread and rice, drinks, and the three meals of the day.

Many food words are countable. You can count them: an apple, two apples, an egg, three eggs. Other words are uncountable: bread, rice, pasta, cheese, meat, water, milk. You don't count them, so they have no a or an and no -s. Say some bread, not a bread, and some water, not waters.

Use some in affirmative sentences and any in negatives and questions: There is some milk. There isn't any cheese. Is there any bread? With plural countable words it is the same: There are some eggs. Are there any bananas?

To talk about meals, we usually say have: I have breakfast at seven o'clock. We have dinner at home. To talk about the food you like, use like, love or hate: I love pasta. My brother doesn't like carrots. Do you like fish?

The countable and uncountable nouns page has more practice with a, an, some and any. The exercises above help you learn the words: match each word with its picture, choose the right word, and write it.
