You and it:

How Object Pronouns Work in English

Read this: 'I know Maria. I like Maria. I see Maria every day.' The name is there again and again. Object pronouns help here: 'I know Maria. I like her. I see her every day.' These object pronouns exercises help you use them in short, real sentences.

English has two forms of most pronouns. The subject form comes before the verb: I, he, she, we, they. The object form comes after the verb: me, him, her, us, them. Only you and it are the same in both places: You know me. I know you.

Object pronouns also come after small words like for, with, to and next to: This is for him. I sit next to her. They live with us. Many learners say 'for I' or 'with she', but English needs 'for me' and 'with her'.

Word order is a big problem for many learners. In Spanish and Portuguese, for example, the pronoun often goes before the verb. In English, it goes after the verb: I love it, not I it love. Practice this in the exercises above, and object pronouns soon feel natural.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between subject and object pronouns?

Subject pronouns (I, he, she, we, they) come before the verb. Object pronouns (me, him, her, us, them) come after the verb, or after words like for and with. She loves him. He loves her.

Is 'I it love' correct?

No. In Spanish and some other languages, the object pronoun goes before the verb. In English, it goes after the verb: I love it. I know her. We see them.

Do I say 'for I' or 'for me'?

Say 'for me'. After words like for, with and to, use an object pronoun: This is for me. She lives with us. I write to them.

Is 'her' an object pronoun or a possessive?

It is both. 'Her' is the object form of she: I like her. 'Her' is also a possessive: her book. The other pronouns have two different words: him and his, them and their.

Do I use 'them' for things too?

Yes. 'Them' is for two or more people, animals or things: I like these shoes. I like them.

Answer key
  1. 1. Tom is my brother. I love ___.

    Answer: him

The blank comes after the verb love and refers to Tom, so we use him. He is a subject pronoun, and his is a possessive.

    Answer: us

After for, we use an object pronoun. The object form of we is us.

Bananas are two or more things, so we use them after the verb. It is for one thing.

The pronoun goes after the verb: I love it. Fish is a food, so we use it, not him.
