Used To Game: rules and examples

Used to talks about habits and states in the past that are not true now. The form is used to + base verb, and it is the same for every person. In negatives and questions, use did and use to without the d. This game also checks when to use the past simple instead.

01

Past habits and states

Use used to + base verb for something that happened often, or was true, in the past but is different now.

  • I used to play football every Saturday.

    A past habit.
  • She used to have long hair.

    A past state.
  • He used to be shy.

Used to can go with be.

02

Negatives: didn't use to

Use didn't use to + base verb. Did already shows the past, so use has no d.

  • We didn't use to have a computer.

    Negative past habit.
  • Incorrect I didn't used to like fish.

Correct I didn't use to like fish.

    Without the d.

03

Questions and short answers

Start with Did + subject + use to. Answer with did or didn't only.

  • Did you use to live in a big city?

Did + you + use to.
  • Yes, I did.

    Short answer.
  • No, I didn't.

    Short negative answer.

04

Used to or the past simple?

Use the past simple for one finished event or a specified number of events. Used to can describe a past habit even when you name its period.

  • Yesterday I visited my aunt.

    One action, one time.
  • Incorrect Last year I used to visit Madrid three times.

Correct Last year I visited Madrid three times.

    A named time.

05

Past, not present

Used to is only for the past. For the present, use the present simple with words such as usually or nowadays.

  • I usually walk to work.

    Present habit.
  • I used to walk to work, but now I take the bus.

    Past habit, different now.

FAQ

Is this used to game free?

Yes. Play as many short rounds as you like without creating an account.

What does used to mean?

Used to talks about habits and states in the past that are different now. I used to live in Rome means I lived there before, but I do not live there now.

Why is there no d in didn't use to?

Did already shows the past, so the next verb goes back to the base form: didn't use to and Did you use to.

When do I use the past simple instead of used to?

Use the past simple for one finished action or a specified number of times: I visited Paris last year. A named period can still include a habit: As a child, I used to visit Paris.

Can I use this game in class?

Yes. Ask pairs to talk about how life was different ten years ago, then compare their sentences with the explanations in the game.

Does the game save my score?
