Subject Verb Agreement Game: rules and examples

A verb must agree with its subject, not with a nearby noun. Start with one person versus several, then practise words such as everyone, phrases such as the box of photos, and advanced choices involving either/or and quantities.

One subject or more?

A singular third-person subject usually takes -s in present simple; plural subjects take the base form. Be and have also change form.

  • The child plays.

    Singular subject.
  • The children play.

    Plural subject.
  • She has a book.

    Singular has.

Find the head noun

Words in an of-phrase or a phrase set off by commas do not replace the real subject.

  • The box of photos is here.

    Box is singular.
  • The keys to the room are here.

    Keys is plural.
  • The author, along with her editors, is attending.

    Author controls is.

Everyone, each and neither

These words are grammatically singular in standard formal agreement, even if they refer to multiple people or choices.

  • Everyone wants a seat.

    Everyone is singular.
  • Each answer is important.

    Each is singular.
  • Neither answer seems correct.

    Neither answer is singular.

Quantities and measures

The noun after some of or half of often decides agreement. A measure considered one amount can take a singular verb.

  • Some of the water is missing.

    Water is uncountable.
  • Some of the bottles are missing.

    Bottles is plural.
  • Ten dollars is enough.

    One sum of money.

Either/or and tricky number phrases

With either/or or neither/nor, the verb commonly agrees with the nearer subject. The number of is singular; a number of is plural.

  • Either the manager or the assistants are here.

    Assistants is nearer.
  • The number of visitors is rising.

    The number is singular.
  • A number of visitors are waiting.

    A number of means several.
