01

Subject questions: no do, does or did

In a neutral subject question, who or what takes the place of the subject, so the verb follows it. Emphatic do, does or did is possible in special contexts, but not needed for an ordinary question.

  • Incorrect Who does wants a coffee?

02

Object questions: use do, does or did

When who or what is the object, use question word + do, does or did + subject + verb. The answer is the person or thing that receives the action.

Who is the object. Anna is she, so use does.
  • What do you want?

    What is the object.
  • Who did you see at the park?

The time is past, so use did.

03

Present simple and past simple

In a present simple subject question, the verb ends in s, as with he or she. In a past simple subject question, use the past form of the verb.

  • Who likes pizza?

    Present: likes.
  • Incorrect Who did broke the window?

    Correct Who broke the window?

    Past: broke.
  • Who called Sam?

Questions with be

With be, the order is the same in both questions. Do not use do, does or did.

Be, so there is no does.
  • What is on the table?

Be, so there is no does.
  • Who is that man?

    Be with who.

05

Reading the answer

The same words can ask two different questions. Check who does the action and who receives it. Short answers use the person and do, does or did.

Tom is the subject: Tom likes Anna.
  • Who does Anna like? Tom.

Tom is the object: Anna likes Tom.
