Present Simple Game: rules and examples

Present simple describes habits, general facts, states and regular schedules. Use the base verb with I/you/we/they and add -s or -es with he/she/it. Questions and negatives usually need do or does.

Routines and facts

Use present simple for repeated actions and general facts. Words such as every day and usually often signal a routine.

  • I walk to school every day.

    Repeated action.
  • Water freezes at 0°C at standard pressure.

    General fact.

He, she, it: -s and spelling

Third-person singular usually adds -s; some verbs add -es or change consonant + y to -ies.

  • She works here.

    Regular -s.
  • He watches TV.

    Watch adds -es.
  • She studies English.

    Study changes y to -ies.

Negatives and questions

Use do not/don't or does not/doesn't + base verb. Questions start with do or does; do not add -s to the main verb after does.

  • She doesn't like coffee.

    Does not + like.

    Correct Does he work here?

Frequency and states

Adverbs such as always and usually normally precede the main verb. State verbs such as know and believe usually take the simple form.

  • She always arrives early.

Timetables and general conditions

Present simple can describe an official timetable or both sides of a general if/then rule.

  • The train leaves at six.

    Regular timetable.
  • If you heat ice, it melts.
