Possessive and Reflexive Pronouns Game: rules and examples

A possessive pronoun such as mine or yours replaces my book or your book. A reflexive pronoun such as myself or themselves shows that the same person does and receives the action. Practise both groups and the phrases that use them.

01

Possessive pronouns

Mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs take the place of a possessive adjective and a noun. Do not say the noun again.

  • That bag is mine.

    Mine means my bag.
  • Our house is old, but theirs is new.

    Theirs means their house.
  • Is this pen yours?

    Yours means your pen.

02

My or mine?

My, your, her, our and their go before a noun. Mine, yours, hers, ours and theirs stand alone. His is the same in both cases.

  • This is my book.

My goes before the noun book.
  • Incorrect This is mine book.

    Correct This book is mine.

    Mine stands alone.
  • The red car is his.

    His can stand alone.

03

Reflexive pronouns

Use myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and themselves when the subject and the object are the same person.

  • I cut myself.

I and myself are the same person.
  • She looked at herself in the mirror.

Herself is the same person as she.
  • I hurt him.

Him is another person, so there is no reflexive pronoun.

04

Singular and plural

Singular reflexive pronouns end in self. Plural ones end in selves: yourselves, ourselves, themselves.

  • Please help yourself, Mrs Brown.

    One person: yourself.
  • Incorrect Please help yourselfs, children.

    Correct Please help yourselves, children.

    More than one person: yourselves.
  • We enjoyed ourselves.

    We takes ourselves.

05

By myself and other useful phrases

By myself means alone or without help. Enjoy yourself means have a good time. Its is only a possessive adjective, so we do not use it alone.

  • She did it by herself.

    Nobody helped her.
  • Enjoy yourself at the party!

    Have a good time.
  • Incorrect The bed is its.

Correct The dog is in its bed.

    Its goes before a noun.
